Episode 8: Giving Medicine to your Pet

In this month’s episode, Dr. Slome gives you tips on how to administer medicine to your cat or dog. Pet owners are often frustrated because our furry friends don’t always cooperate. Watch Dr. Slome as he walks you through the technique we use here at the hospital. You will feel more reassured of your self and your pet will love you for it!

As it is normal, every now and then your pet might get sick and medications need to be administer. Although, giving medicine to your pet can be a challenging task there is no need to worry if you follow the instructions given by your vet.

  1. Remember to read labels and ask vet, if meds need to be given on an empty or full stomach
  2. If necessary get someone to help you in the process
  3. Medicate on a hard-non slippery surface
  4. Stay calm as pets sense your nervousness and it may more difficult to finish the job.
  5. Reward your pet with a treat

How to administer Pills:

  1. Hold pill on one hand
  2. Firmly hold upper jaw with other hand
  3. While opening mouth gently fold upper lip, this decreases chances of being bitten
  4. Tilt head upwards and use your middle finger to gently open lower jaw.
  5. Place pill as far back on the tongue as possible
  6. Close mouth immediately but keeping your hand over it and placing head down to facilitate swallowing
  7. Stroke the throat or blow nose to encourage swallowing

Hot to administer liquid meds:

  1. Hold dog’s muzzle with one hand and syringe in other
  2. Gently squirt meds in pouch between teeth and cheeks
  3. Keep jaws closed and tilt head slightly
  4. Stoke throat and blow nose to encourage swallowing

In case pet gag or cough out meds: lower their heads and calm them down, wait a few minutes then try again.
